Karen Atkins Purifoy
A Life of Design, Discovery + Intentional Living
As someone who has spent decades exploring the connections between our surroundings, personal expression, and the way we experience life, I have come to believe that refinement is not simply about what we possess, how we present ourselves, or the spaces we inhabit. It is about the meaning we bring to those experiences.
My journey has taken me through the worlds of interior architecture + interior design, fashion, education, etiquette, hospitality, and wellness. Each has influenced how I understand beauty, individuality, connection, and the art of living well.
Along the way, I have discovered that some of life’s most meaningful moments are not necessarily the grandest. They can be found in an unexpected conversation, an object with a story, a thoughtfully prepared table, or a quiet moment spent reflecting over a cup of tea.
Where Experience Meets Purpose
With more than 25 years of experience in the interiors industry, I have had the opportunity to explore how thoughtful design influences the way we live, work, and connect with our surroundings.
I hold a Master of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture + Design from George Washington University and a Bachelor of Science in Urban Studies [Redevelopment + Planning] from Morgan State University.
My professional journey has also included studies in fashion design and image architecture, along with leadership and educational roles that have expanded my appreciation for personal expression and lifelong learning.
As a Certified Etiquette Professional and Tea Party Certified Instructor, I have explored the importance of gracious living, cultural traditions, meaningful hospitality, and the simple art of making others feel welcome.
Beyond design and lifestyle education, I have served in leadership and mentoring roles, including Vice President of Education for the Association of Image Consultants International, design instruction with the National Building Museum’s Design Apprenticeship Program, and community engagement with Howard County Public Schools.
These experiences have reinforced something I deeply value: knowledge becomes even more meaningful when it is shared.
Beyond the Profession
My Interests have never been confined to a single discipline.
I am drawn to the stories behind unusual objects, the character of vintage furnishings, the creativity of contemporary design, the richness of different cultures, and the rituals that invite us to slow down and appreciate the present moment.
I find inspiration in art, travel, nature, tea, meaningful conversations, and the ongoing process of personal discovery.
I believe we can continue evolving throughout our lives, allowing our experiences to shape us without allowing them to define our limitations.
It is this curiosity and appreciation for life’s many expressions that continue to inspire my work and the evolving vision of REFINED…
